What Is Roxborough Like?

Roxborough follows the crest of the ridge between the Wissahickon and Schuylkill valleys, and Ridge Avenue, one of its oldest roads, runs along the top. It is the neighborhood’s main street, with independent shops, cafes, restaurants and everyday errands along it. Street parking on Ridge Avenue can be tight, so it pays to ask about parking when you tour.

Green space is the other big draw. Wissahickon Valley Park, a 2,000-acre part of Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park system, runs along the neighborhood’s northeast edge, with more than 50 miles of trails and Forbidden Drive, the former Wissahickon Turnpike. Gorgas Park, on Ridge Avenue, hosts summer concerts and community events. Down the hill in Manayunk, the canal towpath connects to the Schuylkill River Trail for walking, running and cycling along the river.

Much of lower Roxborough is made up of rowhomes and houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries, while the northwest end, often called Upper Roxborough, runs out toward the Montgomery County line.

Types of Rentals in Roxborough

Rentals in and around Roxborough range from apartment buildings to units in older rowhomes and houses. Because the housing stock varies so much, compare what each listing includes as well as the monthly rent. Before you sign, ask:

  1. Parking: Is there off-street parking, is it assigned, and is it included or a separate monthly fee? If not, how easy is street parking on the block?
  2. Laundry: Is there a washer and dryer in the unit, shared laundry in the building, or none at all?
  3. Heat and utilities: How is the unit heated and cooled, and which utilities are in the rent and which do you pay separately?
  4. Pets: Are pets allowed, and are there weight or breed rules, deposits or monthly pet rent?
  5. Lease terms: How long is the lease, and what are the rules on renewals and breaking it early?
